Every spring, one-day races in Belgium, Netherlands and France provide a unique spectacle for cycling fans. Among them, the Flemish and Ardennes Classics stand out with their distinct characteristics some of these races are even called "Monuments". But what exactly sets these two legendary types of races apart ? Let’s break it down for you.
Flemish Classics : Tough and Bumpy Races
The Flemish Classics take place in Belgium, mostly in late March and early April. These races are known for their cobbled roads and short, steep climbs.

Main Features :
- Cobblestones: Many roads are made of uneven, bumpy stones, making the race harder.
- Short but steep hills : Climbs like the Muur van Geraardsbergen and Koppenberg are really brutal.
- Tough racing : Riders attack often, and only the strongest can win.

Ardennes Classics : Puncheur’ Races
The Ardennes Classics take place later, in mid-April, on smoother but hillier roads in Belgium and the Netherlands.

- Longer, steeper climbs: These hills are tougher and more selective.
- Fast attacks : Riders must be explosive.
- No cobblestones: Unlike the Flemish races, the roads are smoother.

- Amstel Gold Race (Netherlands)
- La Flèche Wallonne
- Liège-Bastogne-Liège
These races suit climbers and explosive riders who can attack on steep hills.
Different Styles, Different Riders
Flemish Classics need power and endurance on cobbles. Ardennes Classics require explosivity and climbing skills. Some champions, like Philippe Gilbert and Tadej Pogačar, have won both types. Both sets of races are exciting but very different. The Flemish Classics are all about raw strength, while the Ardennes Classics favor climbers.
